| A complete ninth chord contains five notes, 1 - 3 - 5 - 7 - 9, since each higher number includes all of the lower ones! Here are examples of a few complete ninth chords. | |

Often one note of the ninth chord must be omitted. In the first example the third is omitted. The second example looks like a tone cluster but can also be C9 in third inversion with no fifth. The third chord is a complete C9 in second inversion but could be viewed as a Gm13. The last C9 has no third. If it came at the end of a piece in B-flat it would be a Bb6-9. |
