Higher Numbers
A complete ninth chord contains five notes, 1 - 3 - 5 - 7 - 9, since each higher number includes all of the lower ones! Here are examples of a few complete ninth chords.
F9: A minor 7th and a major ninth.
F9(b9): A minor ninth is indicated with a flat.
Fm9: The root triad is minor.

F9maj7: Remember the seventh is minor unless indicated.
F9(b5): A diminished triad in a ninth is indicated by a flat-5.
F9(#5#9): Likewise "augmented" is not used in the higher numbered chords.

Ninths

All C-Ninths

Often one note of the ninth chord must be omitted. In the first example the third is omitted.

The second example looks like a tone cluster but can also be C9 in third inversion with no fifth.

The third chord is a complete C9 in second inversion but could be viewed as a Gm13.

The last C9 has no third. If it came at the end of a piece in B-flat it would be a Bb6-9.
